Built in 1957, Maplewood Elementary was designed for 400 students. Today, 830 children crowd into hallways converted to classrooms, share bathrooms built for half as many, and study in rooms without heating vents or broadband.
Two structural surveys in the past five years have flagged the building for critical repairs that exceed the cost of a new facility. Continuing to patch a building that has outlived its life span is no longer responsible stewardship of our community's resources.
